Eye-Tracking & Quantitative Research | Jordan | 500 Adult Smokers The Client Objective A leading global tobacco brand was preparing to introduce a new packaging design and needed to understand which modern concept would best align with adult smokers’ perceptions and attract their visual attention. The research was designed to move beyond stated preferences by measuring what participants actually noticed, how they visually explored each design, and which packaging elements captured their attention first. The Research Approach Nexus JO conducted an eye-tracking packaging study with 500 adult smokers in Jordan, combining behavioral measurement with participant feedback. Participants viewed a series of coded packaging concepts on screen while the eye-tracking technology recorded their visual attention patterns. The study examined: Which packaging concept attracted attention first The visual elements participants noticed most How attention moved across each design The time spent viewing key packaging areas Overall design appeal and modernity The packaging concept that best matched consumer expectations Technology-Enabled Research The study used webcam-based eye-tracking technology to capture participants’ natural viewing behavior. Before beginning the main exercise, each participant completed a camera and eye-tracking calibration process to ensure that their gaze could be recorded accurately. The technology enabled the research team to generate behavioral evidence such as: Visual attention patterns Areas of Interest Gaze concentration Viewing sequence Attention duration Packaging heatmaps These findings helped explain not only which concept participants preferred, but also what attracted their attention and why. The Main Challenge The greatest operational challenge was obtaining participant approval to activate the camera required for the eye-tracking exercise. Some participants were initially concerned about privacy or were unfamiliar with webcam-based research. Our team addressed this through clear and transparent communication, explaining: Why camera access was necessary How the technology measured eye movement What information would be captured How participants’ privacy would be protected That participation was voluntary This approach helped build trust and supported successful completion of the eye-tracking sessions. International Collaboration The project was delivered through close cooperation between our team in Jordan and our technology partner in India. Nexus JO managed local recruitment, participant communication, fieldwork execution, and quality monitoring, while the Indian partner supported the technical eye-tracking platform and study implementation. This cross-market collaboration combined local consumer understanding with specialized technical expertise. Quality-Controlled Execution Throughout fieldwork, the Nexus team monitored: Participant eligibility Adult-smoker screening requirements Camera permissions Eye-tracking calibration quality Completion of all packaging evaluations Data validity and session completeness Sessions that did not meet the required technical standards were identified and addressed to protect the quality of the final dataset.
Nexus JO successfully completed eye-tracking sessions with 500 adult smokers in Jordan, providing the client with a combination of quantitative feedback and objective visual-attention evidence. The study helped the global brand evaluate its modern packaging concepts and identify the design that most effectively aligned with consumers’ expectations and visual responses.
